The History of Hotel Deutsches Haus – A Journey Through Generations

When you stroll through Kasernenstraße today, you can barely sense the stories that live within the walls of Hotel Deutsches Haus. It is a house that is more than stone, wood, and wallpaper – it is a place that connects people, carries fates, and preserves memories.

And it all began in 1956, with a woman who possessed more courage than means: Ursula Deutrich.

The Beginning: A Restaurant Becomes a Meeting Place (1956)

When Ursula opened the Restaurant Deutsches Haus in 1956, Kasernenstraße was a lively, sometimes rough, but always warm-hearted place. Her small restaurant quickly became a cozy refuge for workers, visitors, neighbors – anyone looking for a good meal and an open ear was welcome here.
“You don’t just go to the Deutsches Haus to eat – you go there to belong.”
Even back then, the house had guest rooms. Simple rooms with shared bathrooms in the hallway, but with one priceless luxury: a sense of security.

Growth and Courage: The Second House (1970)

In 1970, Ursula made a decision that many would have considered unimaginably bold: She bought the neighboring building, doubling both the space – and the possibilities. The Deutsches Haus grew bigger, louder, more alive. And it began to become a small but characterful hotel.

A New Generation Brings New Spirit (1980s)

In the 1980s, daughter Cora joined the business. She brought heart, energy, and an unshakeable sense of what hospitality truly means. With her involvement, the house became a lively hub for groups and clubs. The Carnival enthusiasts in particular found a second home here. The hallways echoed with laughter, singing, improvised rehearsals – and those moments that only Rhenish Carnival can create. And at the center of it all: the Deutsches Haus, carrying and connecting everything.

Hein Joins the Team – and Stays (1990s)

In the 90s, Hein joined the team – and he immediately became more than just an employee.
He became part of the family, a rock in everyday life, a face that guests still recognize and greet like an old friend to this day.

One Chapter Ends, a New One Begins: Focus on the Hotel (1990)

In 1990, the family made a decision: the journey continues – but in a different direction. The restaurant closed, and the focus shifted entirely to hotel operations. With the first major renovation, the bathrooms moved out of the hallways and into the rooms – a step into the future. The house gained charm, comfort, and a new identity, without losing its soul.

Cora Takes Over – and Leads with Heart (2005)

In 2005, Cora took over the hotel as an independent business owner. She continued to shape the Deutsches Haus with a mix of experience, intuition, and genuine love for her guests.

The Major Renovation: An Elevator Into the Future (2015)

The next bold step followed in 2015: The elevator shaft was built – a massive undertaking in a historically grown building. At the time, the fourth floor didn’t even exist as a guest floor yet. But Cora saw something others didn’t – potential. She decided to build upward. This is how the Comfort Rooms on the fourth floor came to be: bright, modern, yet deeply rooted in the history of the house.

The Third Generation Takes Over (2025)

Etienne, who was not just born into hospitality but grew up with it, was raised among guests, stories, and the small daily wonders of a family business. He doesn’t just know the house – he feels it. In August 2025, he took over the Deutsches Haus as the third generation. And with that, a new chapter begins: fresh, bold, carried by tradition – and full of respect for everything Ursula once started

A House with Soul

Today, Hotel Deutsches Haus is more than a building. It is the legacy of a family that didn’t just learn hospitality, but lived it – across decades, renovations, and generations. It is a place where the past and the future join hands. A house that welcomes people – then as now. And its story is far from over.
